A image of blurred phone screens

Our digital lives theme

What’s on offer?

Dr. Sophie King-Hill will lead this event and spearhead the discussions in the room, she is joined by David Russell from Midlothian Council and Prof. Kieran McCartan from University of West England to consider the impact of pornography and what can be done to keep young people safe.

What’s it about?

This event will consider the relatively new phenomenon of online pornography and the ease of access to it for children and young people. The speakers will consider negative impacts but also what young people are learning from pornography and the information that they evidence tells us that they are not getting from schools and other more robust sources. Consideration will be given as to how access to pornography can be managed and that the demonization of it is detrimental. Safe and open spaces are needed for children and young people to explore and unpick the things that they may have intentionally and unintentionally seen. One thing is for certain – pornography is not going away and a realistic approach with young people is needed.

Who’s leading the event?
