A public health approach to modern slavery – opportunities and challenges

09th November 2020 14:00 – 15:30
Talk/Webinar

About this event

Modern slavery is a human rights violation with severe consequences for people’s mental and physical health.  To date, criminal justice approaches have dominated attempts to address it.  A public health approach to modern slavery is, however, emerging as a potential alternative.  Such an approach requires intervention at multiple levels and guided by rights-based, survivor-centred, and trauma-informed responses.  In this event, a panel discussion brings together key figures – including from the Office of the Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner, Public Health England, the third sector, and academia – to discuss the components of and opportunities afforded by a public health approach to modern slavery, drawing on recent research and evidence syntheses.  Facilitated breakout sessions for participants will allow participants to explore issues further and contribute their own expertise and experience to discussions.  An edited video will preserve highlights from the day’s discussions, promoting wider and longer-term engagement with the key messages emerging from the session.
