Drop in to Leeds Libraries this half term to play some tabletop games that will help practice your reading!
Find out how games can promote comprehension and vocabulary, and play some of our favourites, with researchers from the University of Leeds on hand to teach the games – and provide hints and tips for getting the most out of them.
In 2023 and 2024, we have been working with schools in a research project, using table top board games as a way to develop reading comprehension.
We know that for many children, their ability to ‘read’ can develop much quicker than their ability to understand what they’re reading. This event will have games that might help to develop skills, knowledge and vocabulary, but with a minimum amount of reading, so comprehension can develop without requiring their reading skills to develop first.
By attending you’ll get to play some fun, interactive games that will help to develop comprehension with young readers. You’ll also get some hints and tips on how to use these, or similar, games at home or in your classroom to get the most out of games (and help you identify which games on your shelf at home might help with reading).
Dr Peter Hart, Lecturer in Inclusion, Childhood & Youth.
This event is for all parents and carers, and their children aged around 4 to 11. Teachers, librarians, teaching assistants, and anyone interested in supporting children’s reading are also welcome.
This event will be of particular interest to anyone with an interest in supporting children’s reading, and to children themselves, particularly if they enjoy playing games.
No need to book just turn up.
