Echoes from The Ruins

Ruins in the Background with Text: Echoes from the Ruins

What’s on offer?

20 minutes participatory and interactive event with young people on the plight of people whin have been forcibly displaced and have had to migrate due to armed conflict in Nigeria’s troubled Northwest region.

What’s it about?

The plague of banditry in Nigeria’s Northwest region, which is characterised by high levels of poverty, inequality, unemployment, and illiteracy to mention a few, has resulted in the deaths of thousands and the forced displacement of several others. In 2021 alone, the nefarious activities of bandits which includes kidnappings for ransom, mass killings, thefts, cattle rustling, extortion and exploitation, sexual violence against women and girls, amongst others, had claimed the lives of over 2,600 people and led to the forced displacement of more than 57,000 people and 15,000 refugees in neighbouring Madari and Yahoua regions of Niger Republic. The situation on the ground is further complicated by worsening food insecurity given the effects of bandits’ attacks on farmers in their farmlands, thereby affecting agricultural productivity. Despite these, the peculiarity of the unfolding humanitarian crisis in the troubled region has received little attention from academics and stakeholders. Attendees would have a deeper understanding of the unfolding dynamics in the region.
