Research shows that ethnic minority populations experience higher rates of illness and death across a wide range of health conditions including diabetes, hypertension, obesity and heart disease. Recognising the unique challenges this population face in accessing suitable wellness resources, we are holding an online exercise and wellbeing session to support local communities to become more active and mobile and empower them to make informed choices about their health and wellbeing.
The event will consist of several activities including an online physical activity session provided by Leicester City Football Club, a breathing and meditation workshop led by a wellness coach and nutrition advice regarding healthier food options. This will be followed by a 30 minute Q & A session and quiz.
Participants will be given the opportunity to engage in online exercise and wellness sessions through the Zoom platform. Online exercise became very popular during lockdown and this event will allow participants to revisit their ability to use different platforms with success and encourage them to stay active through various methods. However, for many, this will be the first time they have engaged in online exercise and we hope that their participation will encourage them to become more active. The physical activity to be delivered will be suitable for all levels and will be adaptable to ensure that all can participate fully.
The Event will be led by Sunny Rohit, Community Engagement Officer at the Centre for Ethnic Health Research alongside Dr Riya Patel, Research Fellow in Ethnicity and Health.
All members of the community with a focus on ethnic minority elders from South Asian and African and African Caribbean communities
This event will be of particular interest to older persons
