Heritage and Urban Green Spaces

Coxlodge Waggonway and beyond

A children’s map of the waggonway and surrounding area in bright colours

What’s on offer?

Come and find out how people use and value the Coxlodge waggonway. Researchers from Northumbria University will present the findings from our research project: Heritage and Urban Green Spaces. There will be a 15-20 minute presentation explaining our key findings. A chance to explore the exhibition of drawings and maps from local school children. There will be refreshments at 10.45 followed by poetry and an opportunity for you to share and add your stories and memories to our maps. Finally, we will discuss the future of the waggonway and of our research.

What’s it about?

This event is to discuss our research findings from the project Heritage and Urban Green Spaces: Exploring Coxlodge Waggonway. There will be a presentation of findings from the survey, and the school and community participatory mapping workshops. The event explores the value of heritage green spaces for developing a sense of place, wellbeing and for the promotion of active travel.

The event highlights stories from the past, present and future use and value of the Coxlodge Waggonway. It draws on archive materials, books and stories from local adults and children who took part in our research. There will be an exhibition of children's drawings and maps showing how they use and value the waggonway and their ideas about its future.

Creative methods have been an important part of the research and there will be an opportunity to take part in creative activities: participatory mapping, sharing stories and memories through conversation, poetry and drawing to explore and develop the findings from our research.

The final aim is to discuss the future of Coxlodge and other waggonways across Newcastle and Tyneside; and to discuss ideas for future research projects and community action.

Who’s leading the event?
