What’s on offer?

This panel discussion brings together researchers as well as representatives from New Horizon Youth Centre and Shelter to explore why youth homelessness is on rise and propose potential solutions. The talk will be followed by a Q&A inviting questions from the in-person and online audience.

What’s it about?

In 2022/23, an estimated 20,000 young people in London experienced, or were at risk of experiencing, homelessness. This represents a 10 per cent increase compared to 2021/22, and this is a trend being seen nationally. Crucially, estimates suggest that 48 per cent of all young people experiencing homelessness do not contact their local authority or face barriers in doing so.

You will hear from the panel about the rise of youth homelessness and the particular needs of young people experiencing homelessness. You will learn about the challenges facing London’s local authorities and voluntary organisations when tackling the issue and hear proposals to help solve the problem of youth homelessness.

Who’s leading the event?

  • Ellie Benton, Research Officer at the Centre for Analysis of Social Exclusion (CASE) at LSE.
  • Meghan Roach, Director of Operations at New Horizon Youth Centre.
  • Lily Walker, Assistant Director of Advocacy and Activism at Shelter.
  • Chaired by Tania Burchardt, Associate Director of the Centre for Analysis of Social Exclusion (CASE), Deputy Director of STICERD, and Associate Professor in the Department of Social Policy at LSE.
