How to boil an egg!?

Could you teach someone how to make a soft boiled egg or a cup of tea?

What’s on offer?

An interactive and informal 60 min workshop designed to provide young people in years 12/13 with an opportunity to enhance and practice effective communication skills. The main activity will be a ‘micro-teaching’ session where small groups of participants will attempt to teach University students how to ‘boil an egg’ or ‘make a cup of tea’.  As well as enhancing skills relevant to writing clear and concise personal statements and coursework assignments, we will provide information surrounding pathways into teaching and career progression opportunities. University students will provide opportunity for informal discussion about what current student life is really like.

What’s it about?

This workshop has been designed for students in year 12/13 who are thinking about future career paths and the qualifications needed to enter them, including University programmes of study.

We know that many young people struggle with effective communication e.g. the challenge of writing concise and clear personal statements and coursework assignments. With this in mind we have designed an ‘microteaching’ activity that will provide attendees with an informal opportunity to practice and develop effective communication skills with support and feedback from University students.

Our workshop event will challenge year 12/13 students to think critically about communication and provide opportunity to practice and enhance core transferable skills that are vital to teaching and a wide range of other professions. Information about pathways into teaching will be provided opportunity to informally discuss what University life is really like with current University students who will help co-deliver the workshop.

Who’s leading the event?

Dr Mike Cole, Assistant Professor, Department of Social Work, Education and Community Wellbeing.
