A game jam is coming to MCUK on the 26th of October as part of the Festival of Social Science 2024. The event explores the ties between games and culture and gives attendees an opportunity to design their own board game.
Game jams are concentrated explosions of creativity with one goal: make a game by the end of the allotted time. Jams are often used in game development to give creators a space in which they can try out new mechanics and themes. Majorly successful games such as Goat Simulator and SUPERHOT were first designed during game jams.
The session will begin with a small talk from Prof. Garry Crawford who will set the scene as well as provide information on the project which has inspired the event. From there you will join a group to create your own games and given lots of dice, meeples, paper, pens, and other goodies to use. The making of your game will involve following a game design process of ideation, development, testing, and feedback. By the end of the event you will have made a game, tested other groups’ games, as well as received and given constructive feedback.
No game design knowledge necessary – only an interest in games needed.
