Modern slavery, let’s talk about it; dispelling myths and improving understanding

About this event

The UK government estimates that 13 thousand people are trapped in slavery today, with the real numbers of people trapped across the country widely thought to be significantly higher. Only in 2019, over 10,000 were reported to the UK authorities as potential victims of slavery, 43% of them children, with British citizens being the largest source of victims. This can be difficult to conceptualise when perceptions of slavery tend to be deeply rooted in history making awareness and understanding of this very modern crime challenging. This event brings together a panel of people who have first-hand experience of what modern slavery means in the 21st century to discuss the very real impact it can have on day to day lives; whether that relates to the things that we buy, or the news reports we read about migrants crossing the channel, or the local news stories we read about sexually exploited women who live in our communities.
