Photography for all: identities and representations of ourselves

A digital sketch of a woman holding a camera

What’s on offer?

Hosted at the University of Manchester, this is a two hour workshop on digital photography and visual sociology.

Participants will be invited to talk about their own photographs. They will show each other their pictures and talk about the reasons for bringing that picture, the feelings it evokes and the memories they have about it. All these reflections will provide a source for young people to make connections between visual sociology and personal life.

What’s it about?

The workshop will use digital photography from the participants to engage on how personal and digital photography is connected broader with the discipline of sociology.

In the UK, over 80% of young population own a smartphone, and therefore, they are likely to take pictures with it. Furthermore, photography is an object that makes a relational connection between people and evokes personal memories. Using digital and personal photography will give participants an opportunity to link an everyday activity with visual sociology. Young participants will be invited to bring one or two digital pictures taken by them to reflect on three sociological themes: identity, self-representation and memory. The workshop will open a space for young people to talk about their experiences as photographers in a contemporary world.

The conversation will be motivated by three main questions:

Why do they choose to bring those pictures?

Which kinds of emotions do the pictures evoke?

How are the pictures linked to their personal life?

The workshop will open curiosity for sociological thought, make interdisciplinary connections between sociology and the arts and think about themselves as young visual sociologists, encouraging young people to gain an interest in studying sociology at The University of Manchester.
