Planting magical British Beans into school meals

Image of a bowl of uncooked beans.

What’s on offer?

An interactive exhibition with quizzes, competitions, hands-on activities, and games to explore how beans that have been developed and grown in Britain can be put into regular healthy school lunches in ways that the children will happily eat. The interactive nature of the exhibition stand will be developed from earlier such experiences by University of Hertfordshire dietetic researchers and the outreach activities will be supported by BSc Nutrition students from the University of Hertfordshire.

What’s it about?

How can we improve the meals fed to our children so that they are tasty, nourishing, and filling, but also healthier, environmentally good, and not costly? One way we can do this is through increasing the amount of beans and pulses we eat. Explore how beans are developed and grown in Britain and learn how they are making their way into health and tasty school lunches in this interactive session including quizzes, board games, and even a takeaway menu for you to try at home. This session will draw on research from the University of Hertfordshire’s “BeanMeals” project, as well as further research from the University of Warwick, which has developed new types of beans that can be successfully grown in the UK.
