What’s on offer?

Designed for school teachers and other school-based professionals, this workshop will give you the lowdown on what’s changing at UCAS, what the research says about higher education admissions and fairness, and how you can support your students to write the best possible applications.

1. Past: discussion of recent experiences of university applications and admissions (small group work);

2. Present: how are university applications changing and how can applicants be supported by schools? (presentation from Causeway charity representative, UoM Access and Support colleague, an experienced teacher and researchers);

3. Future: imagining the future, next steps and takeaways (whole-group discussion).

What’s it about?

The undergraduate university application process is one that is fraught with confusion and anxiety for many applicants. Research shows that, even when controlling for academic attainment, students from independent and state selective schools are more likely to apply to, and to gain entry to, highly selective universities, in comparison to those from comprehensive institutions. One factor that contributes to unfair university admissions is the application process itself, as recently acknowledged by the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). The fairness and transparency of both UCAS and university processes are increasingly under scrutiny, with UCAS planning changes to the personal statement and reference letter formats in coming years in response to the debate.
