Combatting inequality in Latin America

What’s on offer?

This panel discussion brings together researchers and policymakers to explore the inequality problem facing Latin America. The talk will be followed by a Q&A with questions from the in-person and online audience.

What’s it about?

Data suggests that Latin America is one of the world’s most unequal regions. Despite clear calls to reduce this inequality, and a widely shared belief that high inequality is detrimental to economic progress, inequality persists in the region at exceptionally high levels.

You will hear about the scale of the problem in Latin America and learn about some of the possible ways out of this ‘‘inequality trap’’.

Who’s leading the event?

  • Valentina Contreras, research officer at LSE International Inequalities Institute.
  • Julián Messina, Professor at Universidad de Alicante in Spain.
  • Sebastián Nieto Parra, Head of Latin America and the Caribbean at the OECD Development Centre.
  • Andrés Velasco, Professor of Public Policy and Dean of the School of Public Policy at LSE.
  • Francisco H. G. Ferreira, Amartya Sen Professor of Inequality Studies at LSE.
