Black-heritage students have the lowest acceptance rate to top tier universities, they are more likely to drop out and they leave university with lower class degrees than their white counterparts. Based on 1) a podcast with Christine Kinnear, Founder & CEO of With Insight Education, a charity that she set up to advance the educational and professional prospects of Black-heritage students and a student that participated in the mentoring programme, and 2) a hybrid roundtable, this event explores how Black peer mentoring helps students and mentors navigate schooling and higher education, and the impact on their well-being.
Christine is the Founder & CEO of With Insight Education, a charity that she set up to advance the educational and professional prospects of black-heritage students so that they are better placed to progress to top third ranked universities and into professional careers. Since 2018, her organisation's structured mentoring and Insight Day programmes have supported over 1,000 pupils to secure better prospects.
Previously a Chair of Governors, Christine now sits on several educational and diversity boards including Causeway Education, City Lit, Fair Access Coalition and the AccessHE Race Equality forum. In 2020, Christine won the Warrior Women Changemaker award and in 2023 was recognised as one of the NatWest WISE100 top female social entrepreneurs in the UK.
Christine will be joined by sociologist of education, Dr Nadena Doharty (Sociology, Durham), and this is gratefully co-organised and hosted in collaboration with University College, Durham.
