‘Visions of Peace’: Arts-based Workshop for Youth and Community Members

My local area theme

What’s on offer?

This event is an interactive, two-hour, arts-based workshop for youth and community members to explore concepts of peace and justice. The workshop will be offered four times in two locations – twice in the West End of Glasgow and twice in Govan.

The workshop will be facilitated using drawing and storytelling techniques to develop an understanding of perspectives from the community/local area about peace and explore what it means to be a peacemaker through a reflection wall. Adults accompanying youth will have the opportunity to engage in a data walk about peace and justice as well as contribute to the reflection peace wall.

What’s it about?

In 2015, all countries across the world pledged their commitment to achieve  17 Sustainable Development Goals as part of the United Nations call for all of us to work together towards a sustainable, inclusive, and peaceful world where no one is left behind. Goal 16 focusses on building ‘Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions’ and this workshop invites you to explore what this means in your local area.

Before you join the arts-based workshop, you will experience a data walk about peace and justice. As you will walk towards the room, you will view posters depicting peace-related issues from across the world. You can even complete short reflections to tell us what you think about each piece of information. After that, through an arts-based workshop that will involve drawing and storytelling techniques, we will all share ideas about what makes places peaceful, and what gets in the way of this. Together, we’ll create a peace wall that illustrates our own call to action for and commitment to peace and justice, using prompts such as “Peace is...” and “I imagine the world...”, among others. We will  take beautiful photographs of the wall to help share your ideas with others in Scotland, the UK, and abroad.
