Winston Parva Revisited: A Community Restudy of Established- Outsider Relations

Cityscape Housing

What’s on offer?

This drop in event is led by academics from the University of Leicester's School of Criminology, Sociology and Social Policy. The event aims to the engage the local community, and those interested in the work of prominent sociologist Norbert Elias, with research that has previously, and continues to be, undertaken in the South Wigston area of Leicestershire.  In addition to learning about the research participants will be encouraged to engage in a range of activities including (for younger attendees) drawing the local area, taking part in interactive digital research methods and sharing their memories of living and being part of the community where this important study is based.

What’s it about?

During the late 1950s early 1960s Norbert Elias undertook a local community study of the relationships between two groups living in South Wigston which led to the publication of The Established and the Outsiders (Elias & Scotson,1994).  This study remains highly influential and continues be widely studied by Sociologists as an example of  figurational sociology - the connections between power, behaviour, emotions and knowledge.

If you are interested in finding out more about this research in your local community or are keen to share your experiences of living in South Wigston please do come and join us!
