Big Imaginations, Bright Futures!
Date & time
2 November 2025 | 16.00-17.30
What's on offer?
Join us for Big Imaginations, Bright Futures, a fun, hands-on workshop designed for children aged 3–8 and their families. Through creative play and conversation, we’ll explore what “work” might look like in 2040. Children can design their own future jobs at Creative Stations, dress up and role-play in the Imagination Corner, and enjoy Storytelling Time with tales of real and imagined work. Families can share ideas at the Mini-Exhibition Wall, and children can record their dreams in our Future Voices Booth.
What's it about?
We are living in a time of rapid change – from artificial intelligence and automation to shifting global economies and climate challenges. These transformations are reshaping what “work” means, and for children growing up today, many of the jobs they will hold by 2040 don’t even exist yet.
This event invites parents, carers, and young people to explore the future of work together. Drawing on social science, we will look beyond the idea of work as “just a job” to understand how it shapes our hopes, identities, and communities.
Through engaging discussions and interactive activities, families will be encouraged to ask big questions, such as:
What skills will matter most in the future?
How might technology, climate change, and care needs shape new kinds of work?
What could a “typical” working day look like in 2040?
By linking cutting-edge research with real-life stories and future possibilities, the event will spark curiosity and open meaningful conversations about the choices and opportunities ahead. Attendees will leave with fresh ideas and inspiration for how we can collectively imagine—and shape—a future of work that is inclusive, creative, and resilient.

Open to
This event is designed especially for young children aged 3–12 years and their families, including parents, carers, grandparents, and siblings. It is open to anyone interested in exploring ideas about the future of work in a fun and creative way—no prior knowledge or experience needed! We particularly welcome families from the local community, including those who may not usually attend university or research-related events. The activities are designed to be inclusive, playful, and accessible, making it a great opportunity for children and grown-ups to imagine, learn, and create together
Of particular interest to
The event will be of particular interest to families with young children (ages 3–12) who enjoy creative, hands-on activities and exploring big ideas through play. It will also appeal to parents, carers, and educators who are curious about how social science research connects with everyday life and future challenges. Community groups, early years practitioners, and those interested in children’s learning, creativity, and aspirations may also find it valuable. Above all, it is for anyone who wants to spark children’s curiosity and imagination about the world of work—today and in the future.
