Rethinking (Dis)Ability and Employment
Date & time
5 November 2025 | 18.00-19.30
What's on offer?
This in-person, participatory workshop invites disabled young people (aged 16–25), including those currently unemployed, to creatively explore their experiences of employment and work. Using accessible materials, participants will construct objects that represent their hopes, challenges, and realities. These creations will spark small-group storytelling and reflection. The session will run for approximately two hours on 5th November 2026 at UCL IOE, 20 Bedford Way, London WC1H 0AL, in PC Lab 4. The event blends creative expression, critical dialogue, and advocacy to explore inclusive and equitable working futures - centering the voices of those often excluded from mainstream employment conversations.
What's it about?
This event centres the lived experiences of disabled young people—including those currently unemployed—as they navigate the world of work. Too often excluded from public and policy conversations, their voices are essential to understanding how employment systems can become more inclusive and just. Through a creative, hands-on workshop, participants will construct objects that metaphorically represent their experiences, aspirations, and challenges related to employment. These artefacts will serve as starting points for small-group discussions, enabling participants to reflect, connect, and share their stories in ways that are meaningful to them.
The event is grounded in a sociomaterial perspective, recognising that experiences of work are shaped not only by social structures but also through interactions with materials, spaces, and technologies. By engaging with accessible materials, participants co-create knowledge that is embodied, expressive, and politically resonant.
This workshop offers an opportunity for disabled young people—especially those not currently in employment—to be heard, to influence how employment is understood, and to contribute to a digital exhibition that can inform wider audiences. Families and carers of disabled young people are also warmly welcome to attend, listen, and contribute to the dialogue. The event fosters creativity, connection, and critical engagement toward more equitable working lives.
