Joyful revolution
Poverty, social justice and a pioneer of participation
Date & time
4 November 2025 | 18.30-20.00
What's on offer?
An hour-long discussion reflecting on the life story of anti-poverty campaigner and pioneer, Mary Rabagliati, drawing on a new biography by Diana Shelton, Joyful Revolution. The talk will include a community theatre performance and an audience Q&A.
What's it about?
Tackling poverty and campaigning for social justice must be with, not just for, people in poverty. This key insight underpins this event, which explores the life and work of Mary Rabagliati as well as contemporary anti-poverty struggles.
Mary Rabaglati was a force to be reckoned with. Diana Shelton’s new biography of Rabagliati, Joyful Revolution, charts her life, from her war on poverty in New York City and an emergency housing camp outside Paris, through her studies under Richard Titmuss at LSE, to founding the British branch of ATD Fourth World and groundbreaking work at the first three UN World Conferences on Women.
Kate Evans will introduce author Diana Skelton, in conversation with Tania Burchardt. Fran Bennett and Eileen Alexander will discuss participation in research and advocacy of people with experience of poverty and activists will perform a scene inspired by the ‘‘Joyful Revolution’’.
Who's leading the event?
- Diana Skelton, Deputy Director of the ATD Fourth World International and author of Joyful Revolution.
- Kate Evans, writer and member of the ATD Fourth World Trust.
- Eileen Alexander, LSE Fellow in the Department of Methodology at LSE.
- Fran Bennett, Emeritus Fellow in the Department of Social Policy and Intervention at the University of Oxford.
- Chaired by Tania Burchardt, Associate Director of the Centre for Analysis of Social Exclusion and Associate Professor in the Department of Social Policy at LSE.
