Pooetry workshop
An afternoon of poetry inspired by poo, bowel health, and our relationships with our bodies.
Date & time
19 October 2026 | 13.00-15.00
What's on offer?
An interactive and playful poetry workshop inviting participants to write and talk about poo, bowel health and sanitation. Facilitated by an academic whose research explores poo, bowel health and the often-hidden experiences surrounding our bodies, alongside a renowned spoken-word poet, the workshop will use creative writing to open up conversations about a topic we all experience but rarely talk about.
Through accessible and engaging poetry activities, participants will explore the everyday, humorous, uncomfortable and sometimes serious dimensions of poo and bowel health. No previous poetry-writing experience is needed.
The workshop aims to challenge embarrassment and stigma around bowel movements, create space for more open conversations about bowel health, and demonstrate how creativity can help us talk differently about bodies, health and sanitation.
What's it about?
Too often, bowel conditions, digestive health, continence, and conversations about poo are hidden behind embarrassment and stigma. Yet these experiences affect millions of people. By bringing creative writing into a space traditionally associated with scholarship and learning, we're challenging the idea that these topics belong in the shadows.
We'll be using poetry, humour, and creativity to explore bowel health in ways that are accessible, thought-provoking, and hopefully empowering.
Who's leading the event?
