The social safety net as an investment in children
Date & time
23 October 2025 | 18.30-20.00
What's on offer?
An hour-long talk by Hilary Hoynes on the social safety net as a long-term investment in children, followed by a 30-minute audience Q&A.
What's it about?
Traditionally economic research has emphasised the incentive provided by tax credits and transfer programmes, but it hasn’t discussed their potential benefits, particularly for children.
In this talk, Hilary Hoynes will discuss the growing body of evidence showing programmes like food stamps and Medicaid lead to significant improvements in health, education, earnings, and reduced criminal justice involvement in adulthood. She will argue that understanding these long-term benefits is crucial to shaping effective policy and reimagining the safety net as a strategic societal investment.
Who's leading the event?
- Hilary Hoynes, Chancellor’s Professor of Economics and Public Policy at the University of California Berkeley.
- Chaired by Coretta Phillips, Professor of Criminology and Social Policy, Department of Social Policy at LSE.
