What's on offer?

Join researchers from Durham University and staff from Walworth Primary School for an interactive workshop exploring how we can support the mental health and wellbeing of primary-aged children, particularly those with social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs.

The event will bring together children, parents/carers, school staff and researchers. Through creative activities, discussion, and practical exercises, participants will explore what helps children feel safe, supported and able to thrive both at school and at home.

The workshop will begin with a short introduction to children's mental health and wellbeing (10 minutes), followed by a series of interactive activities for children and adults (45 minutes). Participants will then come together for a collaborative session to share ideas and develop practical strategies for supporting children's wellbeing (30 minutes). The event will conclude with a question-and-answer session and informal refreshments (15 minutes).

This is not wholly a lecture or training session. Instead, it is an opportunity for children, families, educators and researchers to learn from one another, share experiences, and explore what works in supporting young people's wellbeing.

What's it about?

Children's mental health and emotional wellbeing are becoming increasingly important topics for schools and families. This interactive workshop will explore how we can better support primary-aged children, particularly those with social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs, to feel happy, confident, connected and able to thrive.

Through a range of hands-on activities and discussions, participants will explore questions such as:
- What helps children feel safe, supported and understood?
- How do children experience stress, worry and big emotions?
- What can families, schools and communities do to support children's wellbeing?
- How can we better listen to children's own perspectives and experiences?

The event will bring together children, parents/carers, school staff and researchers from Durham University to share ideas and learn from one another. Attendees can expect a friendly, relaxed and engaging environment, with opportunities to take part in creative activities, contribute their own experiences, and discover practical strategies to support children's wellbeing at home and at school.

Whether you are a parent, carer, educator, or simply interested in children's mental health, the workshop offers an opportunity to discuss an issue that affects many families and to contribute to a positive conversation about helping children flourish.

Who's leading the event?
