This event gives social scientists from the Crime and Policing Research Centre—from early career researchers to professors—a unique platform to share impactful findings directly with key police staff responsible for officer welfare across the UK. At a time when policing faces a crisis of officer retention linked to poor mental health, this event bridges research and practice, ensuring evidence-based insights reach those best placed to drive meaningful change in police wellbeing.
What's it about?
This free, one-day event is designed for police professionals working in occupational health, wellbeing, counselling, and support roles, as well as anyone in policing interested in officer welfare. The programme showcases the latest evidence-based insights into police wellbeing, drawing on recent large-scale research and systematic reviews. Attendees will benefit from expert-led sessions, including a panel discussion on the importance of social science research in addressing wellbeing challenges in policing, and presentations on adopting effective interventions, understanding barriers to support, and using internal data to improve wellbeing strategies. The event features practical workshops and discussions , such as an introduciton to using police data and a session on the broader factors affecting officer wellbeing, including family and education. There will also be a focus on designing bespoke, preventative interventions and promoting self-care and character strengths within UK policing. Networking opportunities are provided over lunch and refreshments, allowing delegates to connect with colleagues nationwide. Travel bursaries are available to ensure broad representation from police services across the UK. The event aims to bridge the gap between research and practice, equipping attendees with actionable strategies to enhance officer wellbeing and address the current challenges facing the policing profession.
