What's on offer?

This four-hour interactive workshop combines practical career guidance with creative engagement for recent immigrants entering the UK job market. The programme includes talks and insights from HR professionals, recruiters, and successfully employed immigrants (2 hours), followed by a relaxed “Sip & Paint” session led by an art instructor (1 hour) to encourage discussion and reflection. The event concludes with an open Q&A, networking, and sharing of employment resources (1 hour). Together, the sessions provide practical tools, lived experiences, and a supportive community space to build confidence, connections, and strategies for navigating employment in the UK.

What's it about?

This event, Life After Arrival: Practical Guidance for Entering the UK Job Market, is designed to support recent immigrants in Huddersfield and West Yorkshire who are looking to build their careers in the UK. Finding work is often one of the biggest priorities for new arrivals, yet many face barriers such as limited networks, unfamiliarity with application processes, and uncertainty about workplace rights.

The workshop will provide practical advice on job search strategies, writing strong applications, and preparing for interviews. Participants will hear from HR professionals, recruiters, and immigrants who have successfully secured employment, offering both expert insight and lived experience. The event will also include an informal “Sip & Paint” activity, creating a relaxed environment for discussion, reflection, and peer support.

By attending, participants will gain:

Practical tools to improve their job applications and interview performance.

A clearer understanding of employment rights and workplace expectations in the UK.

Inspiration from role models who have overcome similar challenges.

A supportive space to connect with others, share experiences, and build networks.

The event blends knowledge, creativity, and community, helping attendees move forward with confidence as they establish their working lives in the UK.

Who's leading the event?

The event will be led by Zainab Adegoke, a PhD researcher in Human Resource Management at the University of Huddersfield. Zainab will be supported by her supervisor, Dr Frances McGregor (Chartered FCIPD, Fellow HEA), alongside HR professionals, recruiters, and immigrants who have successfully secured employment in the UK. Together, they will share expert insights and experiences to guide participants through practical strategies for navigating the UK job market.

Open to

Open to adults

Of particular interest to

This event will be of particular interest to recent immigrants living in Huddersfield and West Yorkshire who have the right to live and work in the UK and are actively seeking employment. It is especially relevant for those who may be unfamiliar with the UK job market, application processes, and workplace expectations, or who feel limited by a lack of networks and tailored support.

It may also appeal to local community members and organisations who support new arrivals, as well as practitioners interested in understanding the challenges immigrants face when seeking meaningful work.
