What's on offer?

The African & Caribbean Healthy Eating and Active Living event is a free, interactive community event taking place at the Leicester Diabetes Centre on Saturday 17 October, from 10:00am to 1:00pm. The event will include a healthy eating workshop focusing on African and Caribbean foods, a cook-and-taste session, a physical activity workshop and opportunities to meet researchers and learn about local diabetes research into supporting healthier lives. The workshops and interactive activities will form the main focus of the event, providing practical advice and hands-on learning to support healthier lifestyles. The event will take place in person at the Leicester Diabetes Centre

What's it about?

This event will explore how healthy eating and physical activity can support wellbeing and help reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes and related health conditions. Particular attention will be given to culturally relevant approaches to healthy living within African and Caribbean communities. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn practical strategies for incorporating healthier food choices and physical activity into everyday life, while also finding out how local research is helping to improve health outcomes in African and Caribbean populations. The event aims to empower participants with evidence-based information, practical skills, and an opportunity to engage directly with researchers and community members.

Who's leading the event?

Researchers from the Leicester Diabetes Centre and the University of Leicester will lead the workshops and discussions. The event team includes academics and healthcare researchers with expertise in diabetes prevention, nutrition, physical activity, and health inequalities affecting African and Caribbean communities. Community representatives will also contribute to the delivery of activities.
