It’s Spooked! Film Screening: Hereditary (15)
Date & time
29 October 2026 | 19.00-21.30
What's on offer?
Following previous years collaboration with Phoenix, we’re holding another free film screening! The It’s Spooked! zine team are back to start off your Halloween celebrations with a showing of Hereditary (15): a supernatural horror in which a woman suspects that a paranormal presence lingers after the death of her mother. The screening will be paired with a talk from Dr Laurie Parsons and Dr Jessica Urwin about childhood, family, and mental health, drawing on their research, and an audience Q&A. Plus all attendees will receive a copy of a new issue of It’s Spooked! focusing on maternal horror created specifically for this event.
What's it about?
This event is themed around maternal horror, mental health, and families. Building on Laurie’s research which explores family-making, storytelling, and hauntology, and combining this with Jess’s work around mental wellbeing and societal perceptions of ‘difficult’ children, attendees will be encouraged to question how they view their own pasts, and how this relates to the stories society tells about what a family ‘should’ be.
The film being screened at this event is Hereditary (2018). Which tells the story of a family coping with grief and coming to terms with family legacy.
Who's leading the event?
This event is led by Dr Jessica Urwin and Dr Laurie Parsons of the School of Criminology, Sociology and Social Policy at the University of Leicester. Jess and Laurie are researchers with an interest in family and childhood as well as horror fans. They co-create the zine It’s Spooked!
This event is run in partnership with Phoenix, Leicester’s independent cinema and arts centre
