What's on offer?

Pub quiz and interactive talk exploring the use of swear words and slang in everyday life

What's it about?

Think you know your numpties from your barmpots, and your mardy arses from your maungy bums? Put your lingo knowledge to the test with this fun, interactive session about the wild world of UK swear-words. Based on the UK Swear Map project led by sociolinguist Dr Chris Montgomery and comedy creators Modern Toss, this informal pub-based event explores the use of swear-words, slang, and taboo phrases in everyday life, and looks at how they vary across regions, generations and social contexts.

Join Chris and Modern Toss for a talk and pub quiz, looking at early findings and the most interesting words and phrases that have been collected for the project so far. Test your knowledge of the UK's favourite swear-words and learn what the research reveals about the use of informal language in relation to place, class, and identity. You will also have the opportunity to contribute your own colourful expressions and try out their new interactive "Swear Map".

Who's leading the event?

Dr Chris Montgomery, Senior Lecture in Dialectology

Open to
