What's on offer?

Panel discussion exploring the housing crisis

What's it about?

Years of house price inflation and rising rents, combined with low wage growth and a continuous shortage of homes, have made housing one of the biggest social issues in the UK today. But what are the broader structural factors underpinning these problems and driving the crisis? And what can be done to fix it?

Chaired by Dame Kate Barker, former member of the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee, this public panel event brings together leading experts from academia, policy, and civil society to discuss the ongoing housing and cost-of-living crises. Focusing on three key areas of economics research macroeconomics, urban economics, and household finance the panel will explore the intersection of the social, political, and economic issues at play.

The panel discussion will be accompanied by a small exhibition showcasing housing-related research by social scientists at the University of Sheffield.

Who's leading the event?

Professor Alberto Montagnoli, Professor of Finance & Dr Mallory Yeromonahos, Lecturer in Economics
