Gaia and Maia

A glowing giant puppet and her small human friend share playful stories of connection with our living earth. Created by Bev Adams Arts with Kerith Ogden and Thingumajig Theatre, Gaia is the awe-inspiring Earth Mother and Maia is her engaging human companion.  

Together, through spectacle, walkabout puppetry, and storytelling they invite you to reconnect with nature, come closer to climate change and discover how small acts of care can make a big difference to the future of our shared planet.   

This project was created by Bev Adams as part of her PHD research that investigates how street theatre puppetry can be effective in climate change communication. Her work is inspired by James Lovelock’s Gaia hypothesis that living organisms interact with their surroundings on Earth to form a system that helps to maintain the conditions for life on the planet.  

As part of the University Zone at Light Night Leeds, Maia and Gaia will appear as part of a large programme of engaging and immersive installations and performances. Maia and Gaia will move around the Precinct (outside Leeds University Union) before stopping to perform their stories of care and hope. Bev would love to know what the performance makes you think about!
