The Heat Beneath our Feet

Journey through geological time and discover the hidden world beneath our city. Step into a dynamic floor projection that reveals the changing textures and glowing pathways of the vibrant subsurface, tracing the movement of heat and water through ancient rock formations.   

As geological layers shift across space and time, they reveal how interactions between rock, water, heat and a new shallow geothermal network could warm and cool homes and public buildings across the Leeds district.  

The projection is accompanied by musical harmonies and subtle underground vibrations in an immersive audiovisual experience of the rhythms of the Earth’s interior. 

The piece is inspired by Geo Solutions research at the University of Leeds that brings together world-class experts across geology, engineering, social sciences, and creative industries to lead the way towards a clean-energy future. It is part of Stories from the Subsurface, developed within the School of Earth and Environment at University of Leeds.  

The piece seeks to deepen understanding of the vibrant, dynamic world beneath our feet and intrigue people about the possibilities for clean energy in Leeds.  

The Heat beneath our Feet is a large video projection onto the floor with accompanying sound. It runs continuously on a loop. Visitors can move over, sit down on or follow the patterns of the projection.    

As part of the University Zone at Light Night Leeds, The Heat beneath our Feet will appear as part of a large programme of engaging and immersive installations and performances.
