What does a good life cost?
Date & time
28 October 2026 | 10.30-15.30
Money & finance theme
What's on offer?
The event will be an interactive, family-friendly workshop exploring money, financial choices and the cost of living, aimed at children and young people aged 5–16 and their parents/carers. Hosted at Manchester Central Library, the main event will combine hands-on activities, including the £100 Challenge, where families make choices about how they would spend a limited budget, and Serious LEGO® Play, encouraging participants to explore what makes a good life and whether everything we value has a financial cost.
The event will run between approximately 10:30am and 3:15pm, with three facilitated sessions of around 60 minutes taking place at 10:30am, 12:00pm and 1:30pm. Each session will offer the same core activities, allowing families to choose the most convenient time to attend.
Between sessions, visitors will also be able to participate in shorter drop-in activities, including an interactive £100 Challenge Wall, comparing how children and adults make different spending and saving choices.
The activities will be designed to introduce ideas around needs and wants, budgeting, financial decision-making, changing prices and the cost of living in an engaging and age-accessible way.
What's it about?
This interactive event will explore money, financial choices and the cost of living in a way that is accessible and engaging for children, young people and their families. Activities will introduce questions such as: What do we need and what do we want? How do we make choices when money is limited? What happens when prices rise? Does everything that makes a good life cost money?
The event will encourage participants to think about budgeting, saving, spending, priorities and the impact of rising living costs, while also exploring wider ideas around wellbeing, aspirations and what families value.
Attendees can expect a relaxed, hands-on experience rather than a formal talk. Through interactive challenges and Serious LEGO® Play, children and their parents/carers will be encouraged to make decisions, share ideas and compare different perspectives on money.
By attending, families will gain a better understanding of everyday financial decision-making and some of the economic ideas behind the cost of living, while taking part in activities designed to be enjoyable, creative and thought-provoking.
