Juggling care, connection and work: Insights from home-based working in the third sector
Date & time
30 October - 31 October 2025 | 11.00-16.00
What's on offer?
Engage with our research into long-term experiences of home-based working by stepping into a playful, photo-booth-style “Zoom Room” and imagine yourself working from home in style. Choose from a range of printed virtual backgrounds - from tropical beaches to cosy bookcases - and make your own meeting props such as speech bubbles (“Sorry, you’re on mute!”, “Guess my location!”, “Can you see my screen?”). Snap a photo on your phone to take away a memory of your visit. While you’re here, explore findings from a long-term study of home-based working and share your views on what you think should be the minimum standards for working from home, helping to shape the future of remote work.
Our key partner, Age UK Hertfordshire will also be there in the afternoon session to share their insights on working at home for older adults.
What's it about?
According to research from a longitudinal study of home-based working, the shift to working from home has brought both opportunities and challenges for workers and organisations. Reported benefits include reduced commuting, improved work–life balance, and greater inclusion for part-time staff and those with caring responsibilities. However, the research also highlights risks, such as digital exclusion, feelings of isolation, and inconsistent supervision or support. Cost savings from reduced office use and travel could be reinvested in digital infrastructure, well-being initiatives, and minimum standards for home work conditions.
This session raises awareness of the human side of home-based working, encouraging discussion about connection, fairness, and well-being in the evolving world of work. It allows visitors to engage with the research by having their say on what they feel constitutes the minimum standards of home-working.
